I spent a month testing budget vs premium laundry detergents. The winner will shock you.

I spent an entire month doing a controlled laundry experiment so you don't have to. I tested six detergents — ranging from $0.08 per load to $0.95 per load — on identical loads of laundry: workout clothes, white towels, kids' clothes with food stains, and everyday wear.

The Lineup

  • Budget: Great Value (Walmart), Arm & Hammer, Purex
  • Mid-range: Tide Original, Gain Original
  • Premium: Persil ProClean, Seventh Generation

The Results

Stain Removal

This is where the real differences showed up. For tough stains (grass, tomato sauce, grease), Persil ProClean was the clear winner — it removed stains that Tide left behind. Tide came in a close second. The budget options struggled significantly with set-in stains.

Everyday Cleaning

For regular loads with no major stains? Arm & Hammer performed nearly identically to Tide at a fraction of the price. I genuinely could not tell the difference in smell, softness, or cleanliness on everyday loads.

Whites

Tide with Bleach Alternative was the best for keeping whites bright. Persil was close. The budget options left whites looking slightly dingy after repeated washes.

Sensitive Skin

Seventh Generation and Arm & Hammer Free & Clear were the best options here. Both are fragrance-free and gentle on sensitive skin without sacrificing cleaning power.

My Recommendations

  • Best overall value: Arm & Hammer — great everyday performance at a low cost
  • Best for tough stains: Persil ProClean — worth the extra cost if you have kids or active family members
  • Best for whites: Tide with Bleach Alternative
  • Best for sensitive skin: Arm & Hammer Free & Clear
  • Skip: Great Value and Purex — the savings aren't worth the performance gap
